Most store bought applesauce products are packed in plastic and have preservatives, added juice, citric acid, vitamins and more added, not to mention they just don’t taste like homemade. This applesauce is made with two organic ingredients, as it should be: organic granny smith apples and organic Ceylon cinnamon. The taste is far superior to any store bought sauce, and I promise it will be a hit with kids and adults.
This recipe is adapted for an oven or your Instant Pot. If you haven’t gotten your feet wet using your Instant Pot, this is an easy recipe to try to get started. This is also great for baby food. I know I’ll be feeding this to our upcoming new addition. Check with your doctor first about when it is okay to introduce solids and cinnamon to babies, usually it is about six months of age or older.
I hope you give this simple recipe a try and love it as much as my family does.
- ¼ teaspoon Organic Ceylon Cinnamon
- 3 pounds of Organic Granny Smith Apples chopped (I usually buy in a three pound bag to save money per pound.)
- For Instant Pot:
- Wash and peel apples.
- Chop each apple into four or five pieces.
- Place chopped apples in Instant Pot.
- Sprinkle cinnamon on top.
- Place lid on top, close, and secure.
- Press Manual high pressure
- Make sure the vent is closed on top.
- Adjust the time to 20 minutes.
- When done, open the vent and allow the steam to come out completely. Do not place your face over the vent. Once the steam has dissipated completely, remove the lid and enjoy.
- For oven:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees bake.
- Wash and peel apples.
- Cut each apple into four to five pieces.
- Place apples in a large oval or rectangular glass or ceramic baking dish with a glass lid.
- Sprinkle with cinnamon.
- If you don't have a glass lid, I do not recommend using aluminum foil. It can leach into foods.
- This recipe won't work without having a covered dish because the apples steam.
- Place baking dish on a large cookie sheet or baking tray covered with unbleached parchment paper, just in case any bubbles over from the baking dish while cooking. It will make a mess in your oven if it leaks.
- Check the apples after forty (40) minutes and stir.
- Place lid back on apples and bake for another fifteen (15) minutes or until soft and tender.
- Remove from oven. Serve immediately or allow to cool. If you leave the lid on and allow to cool outside of the oven, the apples will caramelize slightly.
- Optional: Add a dollop of organic coconut oil and top with sprouted or roasted pecans. Applesauce also freezes very well in glass Tupperware to pull out for an anytime treat, breakfast or snack.
